About the Role
This is a unique opportunity to join a newly developed NHS 111 “Press 2 for Mental Health” service, designed to provide immediate support to individuals experiencing mental health crises.
As a Mental Health Advisor, you’ll be the first person many callers speak to during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Your role will be to listen, reassure, and guide them toward the right support—whether that’s self-care advice or urgent referral to specialist services.

What You’ll Be Doing
First Point of Contact
- Answer calls from individuals in emotional distress via NHS 111 (option 2)
Provide reassurance, active listening, and clear guidance
Gather key information to assess needs and risks
Assessment & Triage
- Use structured clinical pathways to assess urgency
Record patient details accurately using IT systems
Direct callers to appropriate services such as crisis teams or community support
Collaborative Working
- Work alongside mental health professionals and partner services
Refer callers to Crisis Resolution Teams, mental health hubs, or community services
Ensure a smooth and timely pathway to care

About You
Essential Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 (or willingness to work towards) in Care, Customer Service, or Administration
Previous experience in patient care or a customer-facing role
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
Ability to stay calm under pressure and manage workload effectively
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with individuals with mental health needs or learning disabilities
Experience in shift-based roles (including evenings and weekends)
Background in handling complaints or working to performance targets
Personal Qualities
- Empathetic, patient, and non-judgmental
Resilient and adaptable in high-pressure situations
A good listener with strong problem-solving ability
