About the Role
Are you passionate about safeguarding digital identities and protecting sensitive systems? Join the University of Reading’s Digital Technology Services (DTS) as a Senior Security Engineer, where you’ll play a vital role in defending the university against cyber threats.
This is a hands-on, technical position within the Security Operations (SecOps) team, focused on implementing and improving IT security controls, managing enterprise-level security systems, and responding to security incidents. You’ll help ensure secure identity and access management across the University and contribute to developing automation and detection tools that support our broader cyber defense strategies.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing and optimizing security tools and technologies
Investigating and responding to security alerts and incidents
Supporting secure integration of new systems and services
Providing technical expertise in Microsoft 365, Entra (formerly Azure AD), identity management, and enterprise security solutions
Contributing to the development of automation tools to improve threat detection and response
Team Structure
You’ll be part of the SecOps team, which covers three key areas:
Microsoft 365 (M365): Manages email, Entra, and Microsoft 365 applications
Identity: Ensures secure, automated account and access management for all users
Security: Maintains and configures security tools, provides expert advice, and leads incident response
About You
We are looking for a knowledgeable and proactive security professional with:
Proven experience managing a range of enterprise security systems
Familiarity with industry-standard security frameworks
Strong threat hunting and incident response capabilities
Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
Experience with Microsoft 365 and identity access technologies
