JOB SUMMARY

 

Job Purpose

We now have a fully funded Research Assistant/Associate position available in Dr. Julia Cordero’s group as part of a newly awarded Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship. You will work on a project to research the metabolic adaptations of intestinal stem cells and stem cell niche components using Drosophila as a key model system. Some aspects of the project will be translated into animal models.

The chosen candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development and submission of research articles and research proposals, as well as assist in managing and directing this complex and hard project as chances arise.

Main duties and responsibilities

Perform the following tasks in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Principal/Co Investigator:

1. Plan and carry out allocated research independently or collaboratively in accordance with project deliverables and the project/group/School/College research strategy.

2. Document research output, including data analysis and interpretation, record-keeping and database management, and draughting technical/progress reports and papers as needed.

3. Develop and improve your research profile and reputation, as well as that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, by contributing to international quality publications in high-profile/quality refereed journals, increasing research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering esteem indicators.

4. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, as well as internal and external seminars, colloquia, and workshops, in order to grow and improve our research profile.

5. Help identify prospective funding sources and build bids to seek financing from internal and external agencies for future research.

6. Collaborate with colleagues and attend team/group meetings, seminars, and workshops within the research group, school, college, university, and community.

7. Help organise, supervise, coach, and train undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, as well as less experienced members of the project team, to ensure their successful development.

8. Perform administrative tasks relating to the research group’s and School’s activities, such as budgeting and expenditure.

9. Perform minor teaching activities (e.g., demonstrating) and associated administrative tasks as allocated by the Head of School and in consultation with the Principal Investigator.

10. Stay current on the latest developments in the field/discipline.

11. Participate in continuing professional development programs as needed.

12. Perform any other duties of similar status as assigned by the Head of School/Director of the Research Institute.

13. Contribute to enhancing the University’s international reputation in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

For appointment in grade 7:

14. Carry out the aforementioned activities with greater independence, leadership, and responsibility, especially in terms of planning, funding, cooperating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues. 15 Create and maintain a track record of independent and collaboratively published research to create and maintain your expert reputation in the field.

16. Review the research literature and environment, identify the research obstacles connected with the project and topic area, and develop/implement an appropriate research plan.

Knowledge, qualifications, skills, and experience.

Qualifications

Essential:

A1 SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant topic or related discipline, or an equivalent.

A2 Expertise in Drosophila biology, including genetics, physiology, metabolism, development, cell biology, and adult intestinal biology.

A3 A broad and up-to-date knowledge of the larger topic area or subject specialisation.

Desirable:

B1 An awarded (or recently submitted, or near completion) PhD in topic specialisation or equivalent.

For appointment in grade 7:

Essential:

A4 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional credentials and experience, with personal development experience in a similar or related role(s).

Skills

Essential:

C1 expertise in Drosophila genetics, developmental biology, cell biology, and intestinal biology. Advanced imaging, physiology, metabolism, developmental biology, cell biology, and adult intestinal biology.

C2 Demonstrate innovation and cross-disciplinary cooperation abilities as needed.

C3 Excellent oral and written communication abilities, especially public presentations, and the ability to express complex data/concepts effectively and concisely.

C4 Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and a collegiate mindset.

C5 Appropriate work, time, project, budget, and people management skills

C6 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation abilities, as needed.

C7 Self-motivation, Initiative, and Independent Thinking/Working

C8 Problem-solving abilities include a flexible and pragmatic approach.

For appointment in grade 7:

Essential:

C9 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current challenges and future directions within the larger topic area or subject specialisation.

C10 Understanding of project-specific technological models, equipment, or processes.

C11 Sufficient depth of relevant research expertise, typically includes postdoctoral work in a related subject, suited for an early career researcher.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Sufficient relevant research experience (or equivalent) for an early career researcher.

E2 Project or Subject-Specific Experience

E3 Experience in Scientific Writing

E4 Demonstrated capacity to produce quality results in a timely and effective manner.

E5 Evidence of a developing track record of publication in a relevant field.

For appointment in grade 7:

Essential:

E6 A track record of presenting and publishing research findings in premier journals/conferences.

E7 Experience of making a significant contribution to academic activity

E8 Demonstrates independence by identifying project objectives through literature review, designing and analysing experiments, and draughting papers.

E9 Experience conducting independent research.

Desirable:

F1 A growing national or worldwide reputation.

Terms & Conditions.

Salary: Grade 6/7, £32,332 – £36,024/£39,347 – £44,263 annually.

This position is full-time with a set duration of up to 12 months.
