The Opportunity:

SSTL is seeking an experienced Aerospace Optical Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of the design, development, and delivery of the next generation of spacecraft optical payloads. In this role, you will be responsible for all stages of a mission related to the optical payload, from initial concept through to launch and in-orbit operations. This pivotal role is part of the core mission team, collaborating with technical leads from various engineering disciplines across the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the conceptual design, development, and verification of optical systems for space applications.
  • Manage multiple work packages related to optical systems and ensure they meet technical specifications.
  • Own the requirements and specifications for optical payload systems, collaborating closely with relevant teams to derive requirements.
  • Oversee the delivery of complete payloads, managing schedules and ensuring alignment with the overall mission timelines.
  • Engage technically with the payload and subsystems teams throughout all stages of development, including assembly, integration, and verification.
  • Manage risk registers and implement mitigation strategies in coordination with the project manager.
  • Review and critique optical systems for space applications, balancing technical needs with programmatic and budget constraints.
  • Directly engage with customers during periodic project reviews, providing an overview of the optical payload.
  • Contribute to proposals and support future business development from a technical perspective.
  • Provide oversight and support for optical system architecture, design, performance evaluation, and subsystem/component specification.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • BSc in Optics, Physics, or a relevant BEng degree, with proven experience in aerospace optical systems or spacecraft design.
  • Strong optical design/analysis experience, with proficiency in Optic Studio (Zemax) and FRED preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and analysis software, such as SolidWorks, Ansys, SigFit, as well as numerical analysis software like Python or MATLAB.
  • Proven ability to work independently and deliver high-quality work within deadlines.
