Job Description

About the Role

Southampton City Council’s Young People’s Service has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and compassionate Young Person’s Practitioner (YPP) to join our multi-agency team.

As a YPP, you will work as part of the Young Futures Prevention Panel (YFPP) — a pilot project designed to identify and support children and young people who have come to the attention of the police and are showing early signs of vulnerability or risk of involvement in crime.

Working alongside Social Workers, Youth Workers, Police Officers, and Substance Misuse Specialists, you’ll play a vital role in engaging young people through appointments, school-based interventions, and community activities. This position focuses on early intervention and engagement rather than case management.

The initial funding for this role is 6 months, with potential for extension.

About the Service

The Young People’s Service supports children and young people affected by contextual safeguarding issues such as exploitation, peer-on-peer violence, school exclusion, and family conflict.

Our aim is to help them build resilience, reconnect with education and community life, and move towards positive futures.

Southampton faces high levels of demand in this area, and we’re looking for practitioners who can make a genuine difference to the lives of young people by offering stability, trust, and hope.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a resilient, empathetic, and proactive practitioner who can engage young people with complex needs.

You should be able to:

Build trusting relationships with young people and families.

Deliver a trauma-informed, solution-focused approach.

Remain calm, positive, and creative when faced with challenges.

Balance multiple priorities effectively.

Work collaboratively within a multi-agency setting.

You’ll also share our belief that every young person deserves support, aspiration, and opportunity—no matter their background or circumstances.

What We Offer

At Southampton City Council, we’re proud to offer a supportive, inclusive, and development-focused workplace.

Salary: £32,061 – £36,362 per annum
(Starting salary £32,061, with annual progression through the grade.)

Benefits include

Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme – 16.8% employer contribution.

Death-in-service benefit – 3x your annual salary.

Generous annual leave – 25 to 31 days (plus bank holidays), depending on role and service.

Flexible working options (where applicable).

Family-friendly policies – including maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental leave.

Training and career development, including systemic practice training, mentoring, and coaching.

Retail and lifestyle discounts through our benefits platform.

Discounted leisure memberships at local sports and fitness centres.

Sustainable travel incentives – low-emission car scheme, cycle-to-work scheme, and season ticket loans.
