A Clinically Rich Inpatient Role with Clear Development Pathways
We are seeking a motivated Specialty Doctor in General Adult Psychiatry to join the acute inpatient service at Elmleigh Hospital.
This post offers the opportunity to work within a supportive, consultant-led environment delivering high-quality care to adults experiencing acute episodes of functional mental illness. The service provides structured supervision, strong MDT collaboration, and excellent opportunities for professional growth, including Section 12 approval and CESR progression.
You will be based on either Ruby Ward (female acute inpatient ward) or Sapphire Ward (male acute inpatient ward), depending on service need and clinical experience.
The Clinical Environment
Elmleigh Hospital provides acute inpatient care for adults presenting with complex mental health needs, including:
- Major depressive disorder
- Bipolar affective disorder
- Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder
- Personality disorders
You will work alongside two Consultant Psychiatrists, middle-grade doctors, resident medical staff, and an experienced multidisciplinary team including nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, and social care colleagues.
Your Role and Responsibilities
Direct Clinical Care
- Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments and daily ward reviews
- Formulate and deliver evidence-based treatment plans
- Lead Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings
- Contribute to Mental Health Tribunal reports and hearings
- Multidisciplinary Working
- Actively participate in MDT meetings
- Support collaborative decision-making and discharge planning
- Liaise with community teams and external agencies
Governance and Quality
- Maintain accurate, timely, and high-quality clinical documentation
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement work
- Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines
- Information on evidence-based psychiatric practice
- Job Planning and Professional Activities
The post includes 10 programmed activities (PAs):
- 8 PAs – Direct Clinical Care
- 2 PAs – Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs)
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Audit and quality improvement
- Teaching and peer learning
- Service development initiatives
- Annual job planning and appraisal will ensure the role continues to develop in line with service needs and your career goals.
- Guidance on medical appraisal and revalidation
- Education, Supervision, and Career Progression
- Access to the Trust’s internal CPD and academic programmes
- Opportunities to develop skills in clinical supervision and teaching
- Support to work towards Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval
- Mental Health Act professional guidance
- Structured support for doctors pursuing CESR
Key Professional Expectations
You will be expected to:
- Maintain full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Work in accordance with professional and ethical standards
- Participate fully in annual appraisal and job plan reviews
- Support junior doctors to work safely within the Working Time Directive
- Working Time Regulations for doctors

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC
Essential Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in General Adult Psychiatry
- Demonstrable competence in acute inpatient mental health care
