Job Description
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a specialist interest in Urogynaecology to join its expanding women’s health service based primarily at Yeovil District Hospital. This substantive consultant opportunity offers up to 1.0 WTE with flexibility available for the successful applicant.
This role combines general obstetrics and gynaecology responsibilities with dedicated specialist sessions in urogynaecology, providing an excellent opportunity to contribute to a well-established and highly collaborative pelvic floor service.
About the Role
The successful candidate will join a supportive department consisting of 12 consultant colleagues and participate in a 1:12 consultant on-call rota. The post includes inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and elective clinical work while also contributing to specialist pelvic floor and continence services across Somerset.
You will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary urogynaecology team that includes specialist consultants, nursing professionals, and allied healthcare staff committed to delivering patient-centred care and service innovation.
Key Responsibilities
General Obstetrics & Gynaecology Duties
- Deliver high-quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient and outpatient settings
Participate in emergency and elective clinical services
Contribute to consultant-led labour ward rounds and obstetric on-call duties
Lead antenatal, gynaecology, ambulatory care, and elective surgery clinics
Support junior doctor supervision, education, and appraisal
Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated patient care
Specialist Urogynaecology Responsibilities
- Assess and manage women with pelvic floor dysfunction and lower urinary tract conditions
Lead specialist urogynaecology and continence clinics
Perform surgical procedures relating to prolapse and urinary incontinence
Contribute to pelvic floor multidisciplinary team meetings
Support mesh surveillance pathways in line with national recommendations
Help develop enhanced recovery and day-case pelvic floor surgical pathways
Contribute to regional service development and innovation within women’s health
Essential Qualifications & Registration
Applicants must hold:
- Medical degree or recognised equivalent qualification
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology via CCT, CESR, or equivalent route
Advanced training or significant experience in Urogynaecology
Essential Experience
- Strong clinical background in obstetrics and gynaecology
Experience managing complex pelvic floor disorders
Competence in both elective and emergency gynaecological procedures
Experience in outpatient and surgical management of urogynaecological conditions
Commitment to teaching, supervision, and multidisciplinary teamwork
Desirable Experience
- Higher academic qualifications such as MD, MSc, or PhD
Educational supervision training
Experience with mesh complication pathways and BSUG standards
Specialist pelvic floor or continence procedure expertise
