Overview of the fellowship
Barts Health NHS Trust is offering a fully funded, full-time Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Medicine Fellowship, designed for senior gastroenterology trainees or newly qualified consultants who wish to develop advanced expertise in pancreaticobiliary medicine and therapeutic endoscopy.
This 12-month fellowship provides structured, high-volume exposure to ERCP and EUS, delivered within a supportive, tertiary referral environment. The post is ideal for candidates nearing the end of specialist training who are keen to consolidate and extend their procedural, clinical, and academic skills in HPB medicine.
Fellowship structure and training opportunities
The fellowship is carefully balanced to support both clinical development and academic progression, comprising:
- 7 clinical sessions per week
- 3 academic sessions per week
You will receive advanced tertiary-level training in HPB medicine, including:
- ERCP and EUS (diagnostic and therapeutic)
- SpyGlass cholangioscopy
- Pancreatic endotherapy
- Therapeutic EUS techniques
- Clinical activity typically includes:
- 3–4 ERCP/EUS training lists per week
- 2 specialist outpatient clinics per week
- 2 general endoscopy lists per week
In line with senior clinical roles at the Royal London Hospital, one endoscopy session is flexible and may occasionally fall on a Saturday.
You will also participate in:
- Benign and malignant pancreatic multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
- The Gastroenterologist of the Week rota
- Academic and professional development
- Academic sessions are protected and focused on:
- Research activity, including a personal research project
- Teaching and educational contribution
- Clinical governance and administration
You will be expected to actively contribute to at least one research project and one clinical audit, supporting service improvement and academic output. Opportunities for presentation and publication are encouraged.

Person specification
Essential qualifications
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- CCT in Gastroenterology (or equivalent training status)
JAG accreditation in:
- Diagnostic gastroscopy
- Colonoscopy
- JAG audit data meeting standard KPI outcomes
- Desirable qualifications
- Higher research degree
- Experience and skills
Essential:
- Broad experience in gastroenterology clinics and endoscopy
- Demonstrated competence in diagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary clinical teams
- Experience teaching medical students, junior doctors, or nursing staff
- Clear and effective communication with primary care and hospital colleagues
Desirable:
- Previous NHS experience
- Experience managing staff or clinical resources
- Knowledge and professional attributes
You will demonstrate:
- In-depth knowledge of gastroenterology and HPB medicine
- A strong commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement
- Understanding of modern postgraduate medical training
- Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development
