Job Description

Role Summary

Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. This is a highly specialised training opportunity designed for surgeons seeking advanced experience in complex and rare paediatric orthopaedic conditions.

The fellowship offers structured subspecialty exposure across the full spectrum of elective paediatric orthopaedics. Fellows will be actively involved in surgical care from initial assessment through to operative management and follow-up, while also contributing to research, audit, and teaching activities within a world-leading children’s hospital.

  • October 2027 – 12 months
  • January 2028 – 6 months

Training & Clinical Experience

This fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to paediatric orthopaedic subspecialties through consultant-led rotations. You will work closely with one or two named consultants while contributing to wider departmental activities.

A typical working week includes:

  • 2 operating theatre days
  • 2 outpatient clinic days
  • At least one half-day dedicated to research or audit

There is flexibility in job planning, and fellows are encouraged to shape their timetable in discussion with consultants and the current post holder to maximise learning opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Deliver high-quality elective paediatric orthopaedic care, including complex and rare conditions
  • Participate fully in outpatient clinics, theatre lists, and peri-operative decision-making
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective patient care

Education, Audit & Research

  • Contribute to teaching of junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals
  • Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects
  • Engage in research activity, with opportunities for publication and presentation

Professional Standards

  • Practice within principles of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Recognise personal limitations and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and professional conduct
  • The post currently includes participation in a non-resident on-call rota, compliant with EWTD and New Deal requirements.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise by start date
  • FRCS (Orth) or equivalent
  • 6–12 months post-FRCS experience in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
  • MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Higher degree (MSc, MPhil or similar)
  • IELTS (if required for sponsorship via Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh)

Essential Experience & Knowledge

  • Sound knowledge of general and paediatric orthopaedics
  • Understanding of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Experience in teaching and clinical presentation
  • Ability to work safely within own competence

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in related paediatric surgical specialties
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Involvement in audit or service improvement projects

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation abilities
  • Confidence working under pressure in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Competence in general orthopaedic management
  • Effective IT and clinical systems literacy
