Role Overview

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Specialty Doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to join its busy and forward-thinking service based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

This post offers a tailored job plan across 10 sessions per week, with opportunities to work across hospital and community settings, including Yeovil District Hospital. The service supports a population of approximately 600,000, delivering comprehensive oral and maxillofacial care across outpatient clinics, day-case surgery and inpatient services.

Depending on experience, the post holder may also contribute to the second-tier on-call rota.

What You’ll Be Doing

As part of a well-established multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality oral and maxillofacial care across outpatient, inpatient and day-case settings
  • Manage dento-alveolar surgery, oral infections, soft tissue procedures and minor maxillofacial trauma
  • Support clinical activity in clinics, theatres and day-surgery units
  • Supervise and support first-tier trainees, escalating appropriately when required
  • Develop sub-specialty interests that align with departmental and service priorities
  • Contribute to clinical audit, governance, service improvement and quality assurance
  • Maintain clear, accurate clinical records and effective communication with patients and colleagues
  • Participate in postgraduate teaching, training and mentorship
  • Engage in research activity and support departmental research initiatives
  • Undertake CPD and participate fully in the SAS development and appraisal process
  • Work collaboratively with consultants and the Clinical Director to ensure efficient, patient-centred care

The Department

You will join a collaborative and supportive team of consultants, SAS doctors, dental core trainees and specialist nurses. The department is equipped with modern facilities, including digital imaging, CBCT and dedicated day-surgery theatres, and works closely with oncology, dermatology, orthodontics and restorative dentistry services.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
  • MFDS / FDSRCS or equivalent postgraduate qualification
  • At least three years’ experience in a recognised Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department
  • Broad clinical competence across emergency and elective OMFS practice
  • Ability to manage patient care under consultant supervision
  • Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to teaching, education and clinical audit
  • Willingness to engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • A caring, reliable and professional approach, with awareness of personal limitations
  • Full UK driving licence (or equivalent)

Desirable Criteria

  • Entry on the Specialist List for Oral Surgery
  • Experience in clinical research or publications
  • Formal undergraduate or postgraduate teaching experience
  • Leadership or extended involvement in audit and quality-improvement projects
  • Strong IT skills to support clinical documentation, audit and education
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary teamwork
