Job Description

Lead the Future of Older Persons Mental Health Care

Are you a passionate Consultant Psychiatrist ready to make a real difference for older adults in Hampshire? This is an exceptional opportunity to join Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, providing leadership and expert clinical care across our inpatient Older Persons Mental Health services.

You will be primarily based on Rose Ward, a 14-bed functional inpatient unit, with occasional cover for Poppy Ward, caring for patients with advanced dementia. Both wards are newly refurbished and integrated within a collaborative healthcare network, linking mental health, community services, physical healthcare teams, and voluntary sector partners.

Our Trust is committed to innovation, staff wellbeing, and high-quality patient-centred care. This role offers flexible job planning, protected SPA time, comprehensive CPD opportunities, access to research, teaching, and service development, as well as opportunities to lead quality improvement initiatives.

We are also offering a £30,000 Golden Hello, paid in staged instalments over 2 years for successful candidates (terms and conditions apply).

Key Responsibilities

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, your duties will include:

  • Providing Responsible Clinician (RC) leadership for patients on Rose Ward, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based care.
  • Managing a complex, small caseload with timely assessments, personalised treatment plans, and robust risk management.
  • Supervising and mentoring Resident and Specialty Doctors, supporting professional development.
  • Delivering teaching and contributing to weekly academic programmes for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Leading quality improvement initiatives and participating in service development projects.
  • Collaborating with inpatient and community teams, carers, and partner organisations to ensure seamless care pathways.
  • Participating in on-call duties and flexible job planning aligned with your career development goals.
  • Supporting Trust-wide standards in clinical governance, patient safety, and recovery-focused care.

Additional Opportunities:

  • Clinical/Educational Supervisor roles
  • Protected SPA time (2.5 SPAs pro-rata)
  • Peer support and mentoring networks
