Job Description
About the Role
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic to the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Medical Statistics and Clinical Trials, who will also serve as Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU). The appointment level will depend on the candidate’s experience and academic record.
The Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU) is a UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered unit, co-located with the Department of Primary Care and Public Health at BSMS. The Unit delivers high-quality clinical research across a wide range of study designs, interventions, and specialties — including drug and device trials, digital health, and behavioural and psychological interventions.
As Director, the postholder will provide strategic leadership to the CTU — the only UKCRC-registered Clinical Trials Unit in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex — guiding its continued growth, strengthening partnerships across the local and regional health economy, and fostering collaboration with industry partners.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a leading researcher to shape the direction of clinical trials research at BSMS and to contribute to the advancement of medical statistics, trial design, and health research methodology.
About You
The successful candidate will be an accomplished medical statistician with significant experience in the design, analysis, and reporting of clinical trials and related studies.
You will:
Lead your own programme of research in medical statistics or clinical trials.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for the BSCTU, including the team of statisticians, trial managers, and data management staff.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations and represent the CTU nationally, including at UKCRC statisticians’ network meetings.
- Demonstrate strong leadership in team-building, mentorship, and collaboration, both within BSMS and with external partners.
- Contribute to teaching, supervision, and curriculum development in statistics for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Engage in research leadership and innovation, aligned with the priorities of BSMS and its partner universities.
- For appointment at Professor level, you will have an established international profile, a record of sustained excellence in research and innovation, and evidence of leadership in education, research strategy, and institutional development.
- For appointment at Associate Professor level, you will show evidence of academic leadership, success in attracting research funding, and a growing national or international reputation in your field.
