The Senior Technical Officer role will primarily support Energy and Sustainable Design (ENSD) research but will also provide opportunities to contribute across other research areas within the School. This is a dynamic position within a multidisciplinary research laboratory, ideal for someone eager to take ownership of their technical area and help shape its development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As Senior Technical Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting research and teaching activities within the School. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing materials and equipment for research activities, and occasionally supporting commercial projects and short courses.
  • Assisting with the ordering of materials and consumables, and maintaining accurate stock records.
  • Supporting the management, organisation, and housekeeping of laboratories and workshops.
  • Demonstrating specialist technical skills to researchers, academics, and students.
  • Contributing to consultancy and applied research projects where relevant.
  • Ensuring health and safety compliance, maintaining risk assessments and other documentation.
  • This role offers a balance of hands-on technical work, laboratory support, and collaboration with research and academic teams.

Skills and Experience Required

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Proven experience in a laboratory or workshop environment, particularly with testing and experimental equipment.
  • Knowledge of specialist software systems, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within Health and Safety frameworks, including maintaining relevant documentation and ensuring compliance with current regulations.
  • A high level of accuracy, precision, and attention to detail, along with safe working practices.
  • Strong time management, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with researchers, staff, and students.
  • Qualifications Required

Minimum of A-levels (or equivalent) or substantial proven experience in a relevant technical or laboratory role.

A degree, HNC, or HND in a relevant subject area (e.g., Engineering, Physics, or related field) is desirable.
