Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and skilled Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our small, dedicated regional allergy service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This specialist role involves delivering advanced allergy care including nurse-led desensitisation, management of biologic treatments for chronic spontaneous urticaria, and allergy diagnostics such as skin prick testing.
Applicants should already hold core allergy-related competencies, including desensitisation, patient education, and interpretation of allergy testing. The postholder will also contribute to the administrative and quality aspects of the service — including data management, high-cost drug administration, patient registries, and homecare coordination.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Deliver nurse-led desensitisation and biologic therapy (e.g., omalizumab) clinics.
- Perform and interpret allergy skin prick testing.
- Provide patient education, including the use of adrenaline autoinjectors, allergen avoidance strategies, and personalised self-management plans.
- Manage anaphylaxis and other allergic emergencies appropriately.
Service Delivery and Administration
- Maintain accurate databases, patient registries, and records for high-cost drugs.
- Support drug ordering and homecare arrangements.
- Participate in quarterly quality and service review meetings.
- Contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives.
Education and Collaboration
- Work closely with the specialist allergy nursing team and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Provide education and training on allergy management to other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in clinic huddles and team meetings to enafe,sure s coordinated patient care.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Registered Nurse (NMC, UK).
- Demonstrated competency in allergy nursing skills, including:
- Desensitisation therapy
- Spirometry and FeNO testing
- Patient education and self-management plans
- Administration of omalizumab and management of anaphylaxis
- Proven ability to work under pressure with accuracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
