About the Role

The Department of History at the University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term Assistant Professor in Modern History.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and assessment across a range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century history modules. You will deliver lectures and seminars, supervise undergraduate dissertations, provide student support, and undertake marking and assessment duties.

You will be joining a dynamic and collaborative department that values interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to historical research and teaching. The department is proud to have been ranked 4th in the UK for Research Impact in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

About You

You will hold a PhD in Modern History (or be near completion) and bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • History of Science
  • History of Emotions
  • Global or Connected Histories

You will have a developing publication profile, experience teaching in UK higher education, and strong communication skills. You should also demonstrate a commitment to student engagement and academic support.

Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations is desirable. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a friendly, team-oriented department is essential.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker visa under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations, if appointed full-time and at Grade 7.5.

To meet the salary threshold, applicants may need to qualify under tradeable points options C or E.
