Job Description

About Us

The Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases (CNMD) provides one of the largest and most comprehensive neuromuscular clinical services in Europe, supporting over 5,000 patients each year. It offers specialist clinics for adults and children and hosts several nationally commissioned services, serving as a UK and international centre of excellence for rare disease management, training, and research.

The LifeArc and MDUK-funded Translational Rare Disease Centre to Treat Mitochondrial Diseases (LAC-TreatMito-UK) was established in 2024 to accelerate the translation of new therapies and biomarkers into clinical practice. The Centre connects patients, researchers, and healthcare providers across the UK, building a national platform to improve diagnosis, treatment, and research in mitochondrial disorders.

About the Role

We are seeking a Clinical Research Fellow to join the LAC-TreatMito-UK programme, focusing on imaging in mitochondrial diseases. This fellowship provides advanced clinical training in neuromuscular and mitochondrial disorders and offers the opportunity to undertake a PhD at UCL.

The postholder will lead a research project investigating imaging methods to evaluate disease severity, progression, and treatment response in primary mitochondrial disorders (PMD). They will be responsible for designing and implementing the research to the highest academic standards, analysing data, and preparing results for publication.

The fellow will work within the NHS Highly Specialised Service (HSS) for Rare Mitochondrial Disorders, attending weekly MDTs, genetics meetings, and specialist clinics. They will review patients, obtain informed consent for research, and collect detailed clinical and family data.

An honorary clinical contract with UCLH NHS Foundation Trust will be arranged, and a DBS check will be required.
The post is available immediately and funded to 31 August 2029 in the first instance.
