Job Description

About the Role

The Sussex Energy Group, based within the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School, is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow in Circular Economy / Material and Energy Use.

You will work with Professor Matthew Lockwood as part of the Production and Consumption Transformation (PACT) Research Centre, a collaborative initiative funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

This role will focus on exploring the institutional, political economy, policy, and regulatory dimensions of strategies to reduce material throughput and energy use in production systems—particularly through circular economy approaches in sectors such as automotive manufacturing and construction.

As part of PACT, you will investigate how the UK’s industrial strategy and resource use policies can better align with both short-term and long-term climate targets. The position offers a unique opportunity to work directly with policy makers, translating research into actionable insights that inform real policy change, and to collaborate with leading academics across Lancaster, Leeds, and Sussex Universities.

About You

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field such as geography, economics, political science, innovation studies, or sustainability transitions. Your expertise should relate to the political economy, governance, policy, or business models underpinning the circular economy or the reduction of materials and energy use in production.

You should demonstrate:

  • A proven ability to work independently and to develop an original research agenda.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply theories and concepts related to institutions, policy, and governance in industrial contexts.
  • Experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, field research, data management).
  • Excellent communication skills, with a track record of engaging both academic and non-academic audiences.
