Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Staff Nurse to join our critical care team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex).
As part of a supportive and skilled multidisciplinary team, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based care for critically ill patients. Working under the supervision of a senior nurse, you will assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate nursing care to promote the best possible outcomes for patients.
You will act as a role model for junior colleagues, supporting their development through supervision, mentorship, and teaching, while continuously developing your own professional practice.
If you are currently employed by another NHS Trust or by UHSussex and wish to apply for this role as a secondment, you must obtain prior authorisation from your current manager before applying. Secondments cannot be approved without this consent. If secondment approval cannot be obtained, you may still apply for this post on a fixed-term basis.
This position is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route, provided applicants meet all required skill, qualification, and salary criteria.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care in accordance with professional standards and Trust values.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care to meet patients’ individual needs.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues to promote the health and wellbeing of patients, families, and carers.
- Work in accordance with Trust policies, guidelines, and clinical governance standards.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment that supports infection prevention and control.
- Protect patient confidentiality in compliance with the Data Protection Act and Trust policy.
Leadership and Professional Development
- Act as a role model in professional behaviour and communication with patients, carers, and staff.
- Accept delegated responsibilities from the senior nurse in charge, recognising and working within the limits of your competence.
- Continuously maintain and develop your own clinical knowledge and skills.
- Support students and less experienced colleagues through supervision, mentorship, and teaching to develop their competence.
Teamwork and Collaboration
- Contribute to a positive team environment by promoting effective communication, cooperation, and respect among colleagues.
- Support the implementation of new practices, protocols, and initiatives within the department.
- Participate in audits, quality improvement projects, and training sessions as required.
Person Specification
- Qualifications
- Essential:
- Registered Nurse (NMC, UK)
Desirable:
- Adult Critical Care Course
- First degree or willingness to undertake further study
- Teaching and Assessing qualification (or equivalent)
- ALS/ILS certification
- AIMs Course or equivalent
- Knowledge and Experience
Essential:
- Previous experience in an acute NHS hospital setting
- Record of continuing professional development (CPD)
- Awareness of current issues and best practices in nursing
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a Critical Care environment
- Experience in team leadership or coordination
- IV administration certification
- Understanding of relevant clinical research
Skills
Essential:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Competent computer and documentation skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
Applicants must hold current UK NMC registration.
