About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Clinical Nurse Practitioner (CNP) to join our Acute Haematology and Oncology Service, including our Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) team. Working across both Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital, you will play a central role in delivering responsive, high-quality care for patients experiencing cancer-related acute conditions.
This role combines autonomous clinical practice with active involvement in service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the advancement of national cancer care priorities.
What You Will Do
- Undertake clinical assessments for patients presenting with acute oncological or haematological conditions.
- Lead nurse-led discharge processes and support continuity across cancer care pathways.
- Take part in CUP clinics and contribute to Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) discussions.
- Receive, triage, and respond to referrals using advanced decision-making skills.
- Perform clinical examinations, request investigations, and interpret results appropriately.
- Communicate effectively with patients and carers, providing reassurance and clear explanations during complex or emotional situations.
- Support education and development for junior nurses, students, and wider MDT colleagues.
- Participate in audits, service evaluation, and initiatives designed to enhance care quality.
- Contribute to the Somerset Cancer Support Helpline through telephone triage using the UKONS assessment tool.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Carry out direct assessments and implement care plans in collaboration with senior clinicians.
- Conduct urgent telephone assessments for unwell patients via the Somerset Cancer Helpline.
- Support patients with complications such as neutropenic sepsis, malignant spinal cord compression, and acute cancer presentations.

- Demonstrate resilience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in pressured environments.
- Provide safe, evidence-based care while maintaining a compassionate and patient-focused approach.
Service Development
- Participate in quality improvement projects and audits.
- Support the ongoing evolution of the Acute Haematology and Oncology services across Somerset.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- NMC registration as a Registered Adult Nurse
Desirable Qualifications
- Degree or Master’s level study in acute haematology or oncology
Essential Experience
- Recent experience working at Band 5 (or equivalent) in an acute hospital setting
- Direct care experience with oncology or haematology patients
- Knowledge of cancer emergencies such as malignancy-related acute presentations and neutropenic sepsis
- Competence in assessment, planning, and evaluation of nursing care
Desirable Experience
- Previous work within specialist cancer areas (e.g., SACT units, AHOS, specialist nurse roles)
- Understanding of systemic anti-cancer therapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy
- Ability to perform advanced clinical assessments relevant to the specialty
