Job Description

About the Role

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking an exceptional academic to join as Associate Professor or Professor of Medical Statistics and Clinical Trials, and to serve as Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).

The Brighton and Sussex CTU is a UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered unit, working across a broad range of clinical specialties and research designs — including drug and device trials, psychological interventions, and digital health studies. It is the only registered CTU within Kent, Surrey, and Sussex.

As Director, you will provide strategic leadership for the CTU, overseeing a team of statisticians, data managers, and trial managers. You will drive the growth and reputation of the unit, develop partnerships with NHS and industry collaborators, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, innovative clinical research.

About You

You will:

  • Lead your own programme of research in medical statistics or clinical trials.
  • Provide strategic and academic leadership to the CTU.
  • Supervise and mentor the statistical team.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Operations, trial management, and data management teams.
  • Represent the CTU at the UKCRC annual statisticians’ network meeting.

Contribute to research-led teaching and curriculum development in statistics across undergraduate (BMBS) and postgraduate programmes.

Essential experience includes:

  • Proven leadership in clinical trials and biostatistics.
  • A track record of high-quality research outputs and funding.
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Commitment to collaboration and excellence in research and teaching.

For appointment at Professor level, you will demonstrate a sustained record of excellence and leadership nationally and internationally across research, education, and strategic management.
