Job Description

About the Role

The NEWREPUBLIC project, funded by the European Research Council, explores critical questions for contemporary political science: what ideas drive anti-autocratic movements, and how effectively do these ideas persuade and mobilize populations against autocratic regimes?

We are seeking a Research Fellow in Anti-Autocratic Messaging to play a central role in this dynamic, interdisciplinary project. Working closely with the Principal Investigator, two PhD students, and a Project Officer, you will contribute to the design, implementation, and analysis of nationally representative surveys and survey experiments in three African countries.

Key responsibilities include

Co-designing surveys and experimental interventions, analysing results, and co-authoring research outputs for leading political science journals

  • Presenting findings at academic conferences and policy seminars
  • Translating research into policy impact and public engagement initiatives
  • Contributing to follow-on research projects and funding applications

Your work will be based in the Department of Politics, with strong collaborations across the Centre for the Study of Corruption, the Institute of Development Studies and the School for Progressive Futures. You will also benefit from the Sussex Researcher School, providing structured early-career support and mentoring.

About You

The ideal candidate will bring a strong research focus on anti-autocratic movements and messaging, combined with methodological expertise in quantitative research. You will:

  • Hold a PhD in Political Science or a closely related field
  • Demonstrate a track record of publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals, appropriate to career stage
  • Have advanced skills in survey experiments, public opinion analysis, and political messaging
  • Possess knowledge of political behaviour, ideology, discourse studies, or related fields

Additional desirable skills include:

  • Experience with research funding applications, conference presentations, and public engagement
  • Expertise in African, US, or autocratic politics, democratic resilience, or anti-autocratic movements
  • Experience in research coordination, mentorship, or supervision
