About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. This is a senior clinical role for a doctor who combines excellent psychiatric expertise with compassionate leadership, a commitment to quality improvement, and an interest in education and service development.

You will play a key role within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care while helping shape and improve services in response to local population needs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment using a bio-psycho-social approach
  • Manage complex clinical presentations and uncertainty with confidence and professionalism
  • Fulfil statutory duties under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, offering clinical leadership and supervision
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and transformation initiatives
  • Support teaching, training, and supervision of medical and non-medical colleagues
  • Participate in audit, service evaluation, and research activity where appropriate

You will be expected to:

  • Reflect on your own practice and actively seek feedback
  • Influence and inspire colleagues to improve patient care and service delivery
  • Adapt to and lead service change within the Trust
  • Demonstrate an understanding of NHS structures, governance, and operational management
  • Engage with quality improvement methodologies, including lean thinking (training supported if required)

Education, Research & Lifelong Learning

You will bring a strong commitment to professional development and learning by:

  • Delivering undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching
  • Maintaining active participation in CPD
  • Appraising and applying clinical evidence to practice
  • Participating in or leading clinical audit
  • Contributing to research or service evaluation activities
  • Opportunities exist to further develop academic interests, including education, research, and publication.

Essential Qualifications & Registration

You must have:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
  • The ability to manage complex clinical risk and decision-making
  • Desirable (or ability to achieve within an agreed timeframe):
  • MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification
  • Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education, research, or management

Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Significant clinical experience relevant to the specialty
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary working
  • Ability to supervise and support colleagues

Desirable:

  • Wider specialist or sub-specialist experience within the NHS or a comparable system
  • Experience leading audits or service improvements resulting in measurable change
