About the Role
The Department of English at University of Sussex is seeking an Assistant Professor in English and Creative Writing for a one-year fixed-term post.
This role has been created to provide teaching cover during a research fellowship period, and offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a well-established and growing Creative Writing programme. The position blends teaching in Creative Writing with contributions to English Literature, particularly in historically grounded or pre-1800 literary studies.
The department is especially interested in candidates who combine scholarly expertise in earlier literature with an active creative practice in fiction.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your main focus will be teaching and student development. Responsibilities include:
- Delivering undergraduate teaching in Creative Writing, particularly fiction
Contributing to modules in English Literature, including historically focused courses
Supporting students in developing both creative and critical skills
Participating in curriculum development and departmental activities
Engaging with ongoing creative or academic work relevant to your field
This is primarily a teaching-focused role, though maintaining an active engagement with research or creative practice is expected.
About You
You will be someone who is both a practitioner and educator, capable of inspiring students while contributing to a collaborative academic environment.
Essential Requirements
- Experience teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level in the UK
Strong communication and teaching skills
Ability to work effectively within a team-based academic setting
Evidence of ongoing engagement in literary or creative practice
Desirable Profile
- Published fiction writer (or equivalent creative portfolio)
Experience teaching Creative Writing
Academic expertise in pre-1800 literature or historically informed writing
Interest in integrating creative and critical approaches
