Job Description
Help shape the future of high-risk obstetric care in Somerset
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a newly created Consultant Obstetrician post at Musgrove Park Hospital, designed to strengthen our high-risk obstetric service and support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section team.
This is an obstetrics-only role, with no gynaecology commitments, ideal for a consultant with a strong interest in high-risk pregnancies, fetal surveillance, and service leadership. You’ll work within a welcoming, forward-thinking department delivering near-tertiary level care in a district general hospital setting.
About the role
You will bring specialist expertise in high-risk obstetrics and fetal monitoring, including the ability to independently perform fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for small-for-gestational-age and growth-restricted babies.
In addition to your clinical role, you will act as Obstetric Fetal Monitoring Lead across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital, supporting training, compliance, audit, and quality improvement across both sites.
Job plan highlights:
- 10 programmed activities (PAs)
- Monday to Thursday working pattern
- 1:12 obstetrics-only on-call rota (Friday–Sunday)
- Job plan agreed collaboratively to support service and professional development
What you’ll be doing
As a Consultant Obstetrician, you will:
- Deliver high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
- Lead fetal monitoring services across both hospital sites, supporting education, governance, and innovation
- Perform fetal growth scans and Doppler studies for high-risk pregnancies
- Run a weekly scan clinic and a fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinic
- Cover elective caesarean section lists and obstetric triage sessions
- Participate in the consultant-led on-call rota, including twice-daily ward rounds
- Supervise and mentor junior doctors, contributing to teaching, appraisal, and training
- Actively engage in clinical governance, audit, research, and service development
- Work collaboratively with midwives, neonatologists, anaesthetists, and wider MDT colleagues
