Shape Community Mental Health Care Where It Matters Most

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) is seeking a committed and forward-thinking Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Adult Community Mental Health Service within the Sedgefield Treatment and Intervention Team, based in Spennymoor.

This is a replacement post offering a well-established service, strong MDT support, and the opportunity to deliver high-quality, recovery-focused care to working-age adults within the community.

About the Service

The Sedgefield Treatment and Intervention Team provides secondary mental health care to adults of working age with a wide range of mental health conditions, including:

  • Mood disorders
  • Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  • Personality disorders
  • Adult neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and Autism

Referrals are received primarily via GP practices through the central Access Team, as well as from Crisis Services, Liaison Psychiatry, and inpatient wards.

The team works closely with Trust-wide specialist services, including:

  • ADHD Service
  • Autism Spectrum Assessment Team
  • Eating Disorders Service
  • Crisis Services manage access to inpatient beds, while inpatient care is provided at West Park Hospital, Darlington.

The Role

As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be a key clinical leader within a dedicated multidisciplinary team, providing expert psychiatric input for both new and ongoing cases.

You will play a central role in diagnosis, treatment planning, risk assessment, and psychopharmacological management, while maintaining close collaboration with GPs, Crisis Teams, and inpatient services to ensure seamless pathways of care.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Provide consultant-level clinical leadership within the MDT
  • Undertake psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning
  • Offer specialist expertise in psychopharmacology and risk management
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, Crisis Teams, and inpatient services
  • Contribute to formulation meetings and transfer-of-care discussions
  • Support safe and timely admission and discharge pathways
  • Deliver outpatient clinics and community-based interventions
  • Carry out home visits and outreach work where clinically appropriate
  • Promote compassionate, evidence-based, and recovery-focused care

Locations & Working Pattern

  • Primary base: Enterprise House, Spennymoor
  • Additional clinics at Pioneering Care Centre, Newton Aycliffe
  • Some home visits and outreach expected
  • Flexible working arrangements considered

Person Specification (Summary)

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Excellent clinical knowledge in Adult Mental Health
  • Strong communication skills and ability to manage complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to meet statutory duties under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
  • Commitment to quality improvement and service development
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Approved Clinician and Section 12 approval (or ability to achieve within 3 months)
  • Experience across a range of community and inpatient mental health settings
  • Postgraduate qualifications in education, research, or management
