About the Opportunity

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting career-development opportunity for UK NMC-registered nurses who wish to specialise in Occupational Health (OH). We are recruiting two Trainee Occupational Health Nurse Advisers to join our supportive and forward-thinking Occupational Health team.

This role is ideal for nurses with post-qualification experience who are keen to move into a preventative, advisory, and staff-focused area of practice. You will receive structured on-the-job training, professional supervision, and the opportunity to work towards recognised Occupational Health qualifications. On successful completion of training and competencies, the post holder will progress to Band 6.

Visa Sponsorship Information

This post is eligible for sponsorship under the UK Skilled Worker route, subject to meeting UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) requirements, including the minimum salary threshold (£25,000) and role-specific criteria.
Please note: the Trust is currently only able to appoint nurses who already hold UK NMC registration and is not directly recruiting internationally qualified nurses at this time.

What You’ll Be Trained to Do

With guidance from experienced Occupational Health professionals, you will develop the skills to deliver a wide range of services, including:

  • Conducting health clearance assessments in line with Department of Health guidance
  • Providing fitness-for-work advice to staff and managers
  • Assessing and managing sharps and blood/body fluid exposure incidents
  • Supporting health surveillance programmes
  • Delivering workplace vaccination clinics at Worthing and St Richard’s Hospitals
  • Contributing to clinical audit and service improvement activity
  • As your confidence and competence grow, you will work with increasing autonomy while maintaining access to senior clinical support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage your own caseload under supervision, progressing to autonomous practice
  • Deliver evidence-based Occupational Health advice to staff and managers
  • Assess fitness for work and recommend reasonable adjustments in line with the
    Equality Act 2010
  • Identify when additional medical information is required and request reports appropriately
  • Maintain accurate electronic records and produce high-quality clinical reports
  • Undertake venepuncture, vaccinations, and follow-up care where indicated
  • Participate in audits, training, and continuous service development

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Current UK NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Post-qualification nursing experience
  • Clear and confident verbal and written communication skills
  • Competence in using IT systems (e.g. Word, Excel, electronic records, MS Teams)
  • Demonstrable interest in Occupational Health as a nursing specialty
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and manage workload effectively
  • Experience or learning related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Ability to produce accurate, professional clinical reports

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous Occupational Health experience
  • Experience working autonomously
  • Venepuncture and vaccination experience
