About the Opportunity

Dorset County Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Band 6 Midwife to join its integrated maternity team on a 12-month fixed-term basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a midwife who enjoys working across different areas of maternity services and is committed to delivering safe, compassionate and personalised care. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work across community maternity services, the Labour Ward, and the Antenatal and Postnatal Wards.

You will also participate in the maternity on-call rota, so flexibility across different working patterns is essential.

A current driving licence is required because the position includes community-based work. Access to a vehicle for work purposes would be highly beneficial.

What You Will Do

As part of the maternity team, you will provide woman-centred care throughout different stages of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.

Your responsibilities will include:

– Providing safe and effective midwifery care across hospital and community settings.
– Supporting women to make informed choices about their maternity care.
– Caring for women during antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.
– Working confidently within the Labour Ward and providing care for women requiring higher-risk intrapartum management.
– Supporting breastfeeding and providing appropriate advice to new mothers.
– Assessing individual needs and developing, implementing and reviewing personalised care plans.
– Recognising safeguarding concerns and acting appropriately in accordance with professional responsibilities.
– Maintaining clear, accurate and timely clinical documentation.
– Communicating effectively with women, families and members of the wider multidisciplinary team.
– Undertaking perineal suturing where clinically appropriate and within your scope of practice.
– Contributing to an effective on-call service.
– Working collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high standards of maternity care.
– Taking part in training, professional development and service improvement activities.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following essential requirements:

– Current registration as a Midwife.
– A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle for community work.
– At least 12 months’ recent experience in high-risk intrapartum care.
– At least 12 months’ experience providing antenatal care in either a hospital or community environment.
– At least 12 months’ experience supporting women with breastfeeding.
– Demonstrable competence across the main areas of midwifery practice.
– Ability to assess individual needs and develop appropriate programmes of care.
– Effective verbal and written communication skills.
– Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within midwifery.
– Competence in perineal suturing.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

– A recognised mentorship qualification.
– Experience or understanding of caseload management.
– Flexibility and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
– A willingness to undertake additional education and develop new clinical skills.
