About the Role

Are you a dedicated and experienced children’s nurse looking to advance your career in a leading specialist environment? Koala Ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is inviting applications for a Senior Staff Nurse position.

Koala Ward specialises in caring for children and young people with neurological conditions, epilepsy, craniofacial issues, and those requiring brain or spinal surgery. As a senior member of our innovative and supportive team, you will deliver outstanding, family-focused care while providing clinical leadership on a busy, dynamic unit.

This role offers the chance to coordinate complex patient care, guide and inspire junior nurses, and contribute to ongoing service enhancements in one of the world’s foremost children’s hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert clinical leadership to the nursing team, ensuring consistently high-quality, compassionate care for children, young people, and their families.
  • Serve as a positive role model and advanced clinical practitioner.
  • Support the smooth, safe, and resource-efficient running of the ward.
  • Champion continuous improvement in patient care by embracing research, evidence-based approaches, and innovative practices.
  • Step in to manage the ward responsibly when the Ward Manager or Team Leader is absent.
  • Embed the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officer’s Compassion in Practice framework.

Person Specification  What We’re Looking For

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), relevant to paediatrics or the specialty.
  • Relevant post-registration nursing qualification.
  • Clear evidence of ongoing professional development and competency achievement.

Desirable

  • Qualification or experience as an assessor or practice supervisor.

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Proven experience caring for acutely or chronically ill children (or transferable skills from a relevant acute/critical care setting).
  • Solid grasp of current professional issues in children’s nursing.
  • Appreciation of research, evidence-based practice, and clinical governance (including risk management, audit, and quality improvement).
  • Basic IT skills and understanding of safeguarding, revalidation, and Trust policies.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in neurosciences, neurology, or neurosurgery (ideally in an NHS paediatric setting).
  • Awareness of clinical incident reporting, complaints handling, or nursing innovations beyond GOSH.

  • Commitment to truly family-centred care.
  • Outstanding communication (verbal and written), organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good numeracy, time management, and teaching abilities.
  • Confident working independently or collaboratively, delegating appropriately.
  • Genuine embodiment of compassion in everyday practice.
    Desirable
  • Competence in IV drug administration and central venous access management.

  • You must hold appropriate UK professional registration (NMC).
