Job Description
Join Our Dynamic Toxicology & Specialist Biochemistry Team
Are you an enthusiastic professional with a background in lab work, ready to take on a rewarding challenge in a cutting-edge clinical setting? We’re on the lookout for a skilled Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant to become a vital part of our team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. In this position, you’ll collaborate closely with biomedical scientists, helping to process and analyze samples from both clinical patients and coroner’s cases, contributing to essential diagnostic services that make a real difference in healthcare.
What You will Be Doing
Your day-to-day will involve a mix of hands-on technical tasks and supportive administrative duties, all aimed at maintaining top-notch quality and efficiency in our lab. Key responsibilities include:
- Receiving, logging, and organizing incoming samples, such as those for toxicology testing from clinical or post-mortem sources.
- Preparing solutions, materials, and patient specimens ahead of detailed examinations.
- Managing inventory by tracking stock levels, placing orders, and ensuring everything runs smoothly without interruptions.
- Performing regular upkeep on lab instruments, including simple fixes for common issues.
- Supporting and carrying out standard and advanced sample analyses like screening for substances of misuse, monitoring tacrolimus levels, and conducting FIT assessments always under the guidance of qualified scientists.
- Helping train and guide fellow team members to foster a supportive learning environment.
- Contributing to our quality control efforts, such as documenting issues, aiding in reviews, and keeping accurate records.
- Upholding strict protocols for cleanliness, safety, and compliance to keep our workspace secure and effective.
Occasionally, you might need to provide extra coverage on weekends in our primary automated laboratory once you’ve demonstrated the necessary skills. Keep in mind, some samples may involve sensitive or challenging content, so we’re seeking someone who can handle this with empathy, poise, and confidentiality.
