Wirral is a place of dynamic, engaged communities—residents who are proud of where they live and passionate about building a brighter future. At Wirral Council, we’re on a mission to make real change for children and families—and we want you to be part of it.

We’re working toward ambitious goals by 2025, and we need motivated, newly qualified social workers who are ready to grow, develop, and deliver the best outcomes for our residents. If you’re looking to launch your career in a council that values your voice and nurtures your potential, this is your opportunity.

About the Role

Are you about to qualify, or recently qualified, in Social Work?
Do you want to begin your career in a supportive, development-focused environment?

We’re looking for newly qualified social workers ready to make a real impact. As part of Wirral Council, you’ll benefit from a structured Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme, with access to regular reflective supervision, learning opportunities, and professional development support.

You’ll work closely with children and families, using your knowledge and practice experience to make meaningful change. With the right guidance and mentorship, you could become an experienced practitioner within two years of qualification.

What We Offer

We’re committed to creating a positive and rewarding working environment for all our staff. Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary package
  • Excellent ASYE programme supported by dedicated ASYE Coordinators and the Practice Improvement Team
  • Flexible working arrangements and hybrid options
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Family-friendly employment policies
  • Access to staff wellbeing activities and engagement events
  • Clear career progression pathways
  • A workplace culture built on support, resilience, and personal development

Additional Information

  • This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
  • Strong spoken English skills are required to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Limited positions are available—early application is encouraged.

Visa Sponsorship

Wirral Council holds a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship licence and welcomes applications from non-UK residents who:

  • Have completed or are completing their Social Work qualification in the UK, and
  • Require visa sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route.

Please note: A Certificate of Sponsorship is not a visa. Applicants must apply for and obtain a visa before employment can commence.

Important Notes

Applications from employees currently in formal redeployment will be considered in the first instance.

In line with Council policy, we do not normally reappoint former employees who left through Early Voluntary Retirement (EVR) or Voluntary Severance (VS), unless in exceptional circumstances.

All candidates invited to interview must demonstrate their right to work in the UK.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if a high volume of applications is received.
