We are seeking dedicated, experienced nurses to join the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital as Band 6 Junior Sisters/Charge Nurses. Our MAU is a fast-paced 59-bed unit, including a triage and waiting area, delivering high-quality care to patients right at the front door. About the Role
As a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse, you will play a key leadership role in the day-to-day management and coordination of patient care. You will support flow across the MAU and Short Stay Units, triage Emergency Department referrals, and ensure smooth transitions in and out of the unit.
This role requires confident decision-making, strong leadership, and the ability to support and motivate a multidisciplinary team. You will act as a clinical role model, helping to shape practice, promote innovation and uphold the highest standards of care.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead, coordinate and supervise the delivery of safe and effective care within the Medical Assessment Unit.
- Manage patient flow and bed allocation to optimise service efficiency and patient outcomes.
- Triage and prioritise referrals from the Emergency Department.
- Support, mentor and assess the development of junior nurses and student nurses in line with NMC standards.
- Contribute to clinical governance activities including audits, incident reviews, and service improvements.
- Collaborate with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.
- Promote a positive team culture, act as a role model, and drive continuous professional development.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Registered Adult Nurse (NMC)
- Significant post-registration experience in acute or complex healthcare settings
- Recent experience in Acute Medicine
- Evidence of professional and clinical development through CPD and relevant training
- Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff and student nurses
- Ability to coordinate clinical shifts and manage competing priorities in a busy unit
- Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills
- Working knowledge of NHS policies, clinical governance and audit processes
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in service improvement, resource management and workforce planning
- Familiarity with learning from incidents and supporting positive change
- Knowledge of national healthcare policy and an understanding of the wider NHS agenda
