The Opportunity

In this role, you’ll help design, develop, refactor, and maintain scientific software used across diverse disciplines—from climate simulations and medical imaging to digital humanities and machine learning. You’ll support research teams by applying best practices in software engineering, delivering robust, scalable solutions, and enabling reproducible, high-impact research.

As a Senior Research Software Engineer, you’ll also have the opportunity to lead technically or managerially—whether through project leadership, mentoring junior staff, or developing training courses. This is a dynamic and varied role with room for growth, learning, and specialization.

Essential:

  • A degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong programming skills and commitment to software development best practices
  • Enthusiasm for continual learning and collaboration across disciplines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • DevOps: Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes, Terraform, Docker, Linux, MLOps
  • Trusted Research Environments: Cybersecurity, Secure Data Environments, ISO/IEC 27001
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC): GPU programming, parallel CPU programming, Fortran, numerical simulation

Candidates with other technical backgrounds are welcome to apply. Depending on experience, some roles may be offered at the standard level.

Why Join Us?

As part of UCL’s ARC team, you’ll be at the forefront of digital research innovation in one of the world’s top universities. We offer:

  • A collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating work environment
  • Access to advanced technologies and high-performance computing resources
  • Opportunities to shape cutting-edge research and infrastructure
  • A supportive culture focused on professional growth and technical excellence

What We Offer

  • USS Pension Scheme (6.1% employee / 14.6% employer contribution)
  • Life insurance (3x salary)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • On-site nursery and gym
  • Enhanced parental leave policies
  • Employee assistance programme and wellbeing support
  • Discounted private medical insurance
