Job Description
About Anthropic
Anthropic is focused on developing advanced AI systems that are dependable, understandable, and capable of being guided responsibly. Our work is driven by the goal of making AI beneficial to people and society.
Our teams bring together software engineers, researchers, policy specialists, operational experts, and business leaders. Together, we tackle some of the most important technical and societal challenges associated with increasingly capable AI.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join our Safeguards organisation and lead the Review Tooling team.
This team develops the technology used by human investigators—and increasingly by Claude—to identify potential harms, investigate activity, and support appropriate enforcement across Anthropic products and external cloud platforms.
You will have ownership of a critical engineering function that supports safety investigations from end to end. This includes the tools investigators use to understand activity, analyse information, and make informed enforcement decisions, as well as the underlying platform that powers these workflows.
The platform covers several important areas, including analytics, privacy-conscious data access, and a flexible sandbox that allows teams to rapidly test and develop new review experiences. As AI capabilities and platform usage continue to expand, you will also help shape the next generation of review processes by introducing thoughtful automation and Claude-assisted workflows while ensuring human expertise remains central where it is needed.
You will work closely with colleagues across policy, operations, legal, privacy, and data science to make sure our investigation and enforcement systems are reliable, effective, and worthy of user trust.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
– Manage, mentor, and grow an engineering team responsible for investigation, review, and enforcement systems across Anthropic’s own products and external platforms.
– Establish the long-term direction and development roadmap for the review tooling platform.
– Guide the evolution of platform capabilities such as analytics, privacy-aware data access, and environments for rapidly testing new review tools.
– Develop strategies for expanding review capacity through responsible automation and effective use of Claude.
– Help create human-in-the-loop systems in which AI can increase reviewer productivity without removing important human judgement.
– Work with policy, legal, privacy, operations, and data science teams to turn complex requirements into dependable engineering solutions.
– Ensure tooling remains aligned with privacy requirements, data retention policies, and evolving safeguards.
– Provide clear direction and priorities in an environment where requirements and technologies are continually changing.
– Build an inclusive engineering culture while recruiting, coaching, and retaining strong technical talent.
– Participate in broader engineering leadership initiatives and contribute to the development of Anthropic’s management community.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Experience
The successful candidate will ideally bring:
– Demonstrable experience managing software engineering teams, including recruitment, mentoring, performance management, and career development.
– Strong technical experience in platform or full-stack engineering, with the ability to participate meaningfully in system architecture and technical design conversations.
– A track record of delivering internal platforms or tools for demanding operational teams and improving the efficiency or quality of their work.
– Experience collaborating with teams outside engineering, particularly functions such as operations, policy, compliance, privacy, or legal.
– Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make complex technical decisions understandable to non-technical colleagues.
– A genuine interest in the wider social impact of AI and a desire to help make increasingly powerful AI systems safer and more trustworthy.
Desirable Background
The following experience would be advantageous:
– At least four years of engineering management experience alongside approximately ten or more years working professionally in software engineering.
– Experience developing trust and safety, fraud prevention, integrity, abuse detection, moderation, or other systems that support large-scale human review.
– Experience designing technology within demanding privacy, compliance, security, or data governance environments, including zero-data-retention settings.
– Familiarity with integrating large language models or agent-based systems into operational processes.
– Experience creating human-in-the-loop automation that combines machine capabilities with expert decision-making.
– Background in building developer platforms, frameworks, or extensible internal tooling used by multiple engineering teams.
– Experience supporting moderation, investigation, or enforcement operations across several product environments, including enterprise or cloud-based platforms.
Compensation
The expected annual salary for this position is:
£325,000 – £390,000 GBP
For sales positions, compensation ranges may include both the expected base salary and target commission or bonus. This role is not a sales position.
Education and Experience
– Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, professional training, and relevant experience.
– Preferred area of study: A discipline relevant to the position, demonstrated through formal education, training, or professional experience.
– Experience level: Required experience will depend on the internal level assigned to the position.
Working Arrangements
Anthropic currently operates a location-based hybrid model. Employees are generally expected to spend at least 25% of their working time in one of our offices, although certain positions may require a greater level of office attendance.
Visa Sponsorship
Visa sponsorship is available for eligible candidates and roles. However, sponsorship cannot be guaranteed for every position or individual.
If you receive an offer, Anthropic will make reasonable efforts to support the immigration process and has access to specialist immigration legal support.
We Welcome Different Backgrounds
You do not need to meet every qualification listed above to apply.
We recognise that talented candidates may hesitate to apply when they do not have every requirement, particularly those from groups that have historically been underrepresented in technology. We encourage people who are excited about the opportunity and believe they can contribute to apply.
The development of advanced AI has significant social and ethical consequences. Bringing together people with different experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds is therefore an important part of building responsible technology.
Protect Yourself From Recruitment Scams
Candidate safety is important to us. Genuine Anthropic recruiters communicate using @anthropic.com email addresses. Where external recruitment partners are involved, they will clearly identify themselves as working on Anthropic’s behalf.
Be cautious if someone claiming to represent Anthropic contacts you from an unrelated domain or asks you for money, fees, banking details, or other sensitive financial information before employment begins.
If you are uncertain about a recruitment message, avoid clicking unfamiliar links and instead visit Anthropic’s official careers website to verify available positions.
Our Approach to AI Research
At Anthropic, we believe the most significant advances in AI research require ambitious, large-scale scientific efforts. Rather than spreading our resources across numerous small projects, we bring teams together around a focused group of high-impact research challenges.
We approach AI research as an empirical science, drawing inspiration from disciplines such as physics and biology while applying the strengths of modern computer science.
Collaboration is central to our working culture. Teams regularly exchange ideas, discuss research findings, and challenge assumptions so that we can focus our efforts on areas with the greatest potential impact.
Clear communication is especially important because our work often brings together people from very different technical and professional backgrounds.
Our research builds on several important areas of previous work, including AI scaling, interpretability, multimodal systems, AI compute, and methods for improving AI safety and human preference alignment.
Join Anthropic
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco.
Employees receive competitive compensation and benefits, flexible working arrangements, generous vacation and parental leave, and access to an office designed to support collaboration. Additional benefits include optional equity donation matching and flexible working hours.
If you’re interested in helping build safer and more reliable AI systems while leading engineering work with significant real-world impact, this could be an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution.
AI use during recruitment: Candidates should review Anthropic’s guidance regarding the appropriate use of AI during the application and recruitment process.
