Job Description
Job Purpose
To provide expert support in updating, developing, and maintaining the University’s academic policy framework, including degree regulations and academic quality standards. The role also involves supporting students, managing academic appeals casework, and contributing to the effective administration of Academic Standards & Quality within the Academic Policy & Governance division of Academic Services.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Policy Modernisation and Implementation
- Work closely with the Senior Academic Policy Manager to deliver continuous improvements to degree regulations and student support policies.
- Contribute to the University’s Learning & Teaching Strategy by developing, implementing, and communicating updated regulations and policies.
Regulation Management and Expert Guidance
- Use in-depth knowledge of academic regulations to oversee key policy areas.
- Provide timely, specialist advice to the Clerk of Senate & Vice Principal, colleagues, students, and validated institutions.
Publication of Regulations
- Lead the strategic and operational development of the annual publication of the University Regulations and guidance.
- Act as a key contributor in producing and maintaining this online resource to ensure clarity and accessibility.
Operational Management
Oversee assigned areas such as:
- Course and Programme Approval processes
- Academic Standards Committee and Sub-Committee
- Assessment arrangements for disabled students
- Equality Impact Assessments
- Court Resolutions
Committee Support
- Manage the business of committees and working groups focused on academic policy and regulation.
- Collaborate closely with conveners and stakeholders.
Academic Appeals Casework
- Administer Senate-level student appeals, ensuring adherence to procedures.
- Prepare and brief Senate Assessors, Appeals Committees, and College colleagues to support fair and effective processes.
Contributing to Broader Academic Services
- Support quality assurance activities such as Periodic Subject Reviews and the University’s ceremonial calendar.
- Actively participate in team meetings, planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Other Duties
- Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Academic Policy & Governance management team.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential:
- Professional knowledge and skills equivalent to Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 9–11 (Ordinary or Honours degree, or Postgraduate Qualification).
- Detailed understanding of academic regulations and policies within higher education or in a comparable regulatory environment.
- Awareness of UK higher education structures, including quality assurance and enhancement frameworks.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with the University of Glasgow’s structure and systems.
- Knowledge of the University’s Learning & Teaching Strategy.
- Understanding of the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, and Equality Act.
Skills
Essential:
- Ability to work proactively and independently with appropriate responsibility.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Confidence in engaging effectively with colleagues, senior leaders, students, and external partners.
- High IT literacy, including experience with remote working tools.

Experience
Essential:
- Direct experience in academic administration or equivalent regulatory/policy roles.
- Experience of clerking meetings and drafting formal reports.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex processes.
Desirable:
- Experience applying academic regulations such as codes of assessment and appeals processes.
Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 7, £40,497 – £45,413 per annum.
Contract: Full-time, open-ended.
