GE Aerospace designs, manufactures, repairs, and overhauls a variety of propeller systems for military and civilian uses. This is done from our cutting-edge facilities in Gloucestershire, UK.
In this post, you will work with the NPI team to meet the growing demand for new propeller manufacturing systems and contribute to the development of the next generation of electric, sustainable aviation. You will be a highly valued member of GE’s Manufacturing Engineering department, which is responsible for ensuring that design intent is correctly translated using our production system.
You will guarantee that design for manufacturing is a significant priority throughout our product development cycle. During development and pilot production, you will provide input to the design team, assist the design team in addressing challenges, and provide documentation, tooling, and training so that the product can be constructed in a clean manufacturing environment.
With an emphasis on manufacturability, you will contribute to the development of new processes, facilities, and capacities, as well as the implementation of automation and innovative technologies to ensure manufacturing process repeatability and reliability.
Responsibilities:
- Driving the transition of innovative products from design/engineering to volume manufacture. The NPI ME team is the primary point of contact for the manufacturing team, ensuring the manufacturability of new products and meeting Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost standards.
- Assessment, planning, and delivery of project timelines, enablers, and deliverables to achieve timely manufacturing ready gateway compliance.
- Influencing design engineering to ensure manufacturing is represented within the product development phase, as well as design for manufacture/assembly, is a primary consideration throughout the programme.
- Support procurement by developing technical specifications, project timeframes, standards, and buy-off criteria for RFQ submissions and vendor selection events.
- Collaborate closely with third-party vendors and subcontractors on programme objectives and specifications, from design and planning to delivery, commissioning, and buy-off.
- Developing construction documentation, bills of materials, work instructions, spares and tooling lists, and training requirements to allow a smooth transition to volume production.
- Planning the installation, commissioning, and verification of new tools, automation, and parts to meet first-time, process capability, and uptime requirements.
- Liaise with the production team to ensure that their concerns are addressed in the right forums and that they are kept informed of programme developments and requirements.
- Work with different stakeholders to facilitate the successful transfer of a new or modified facility to the operations team.
Qualifications/Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering with extensive expertise, or comparable knowledge and experience in technical project/program management.
- Understanding of the New Product Introduction (NPI) process and project planning components
- Demonstrates project management skills in a manufacturing NPI scenario.
- Experience establishing FMEAs, cascading essential characteristics into control plans, and developing a manufacturing quality operational system.
- Experience building and implementing new automated facilities to improve asset utilisation while reducing hours per unit/cost per unit.
- Capable of persuading stakeholders through effective communication and logical reasoning.
- Ability to manage suppliers and contractors on a continuous basis and through local management. Capable of addressing difficulties collectively and holding individuals accountable.
- Knowledge of H&S and CDM regulations and methods of compliance.
- Have the ability to work unsupervised (at times) towards a set of goals and aims.
Desired skills:
- Experience in high volume composite (CFRP/RTM) and/or high tolerance machined part production.
- A acknowledged project management qualification.
- Understanding of problem-solving approaches (Lean, Six Sigma, 8D, PPS, RedX) and APQP requirements.
- Experience with 3D Catia, 2D AutoCAD, and/or other CAD packages.
- Experience working in a highly regulated industry (ideally aviation, but not required).
- Knowledge of 3D printing/rapid prototyping technologies, CAD software, and part manufacture.
- Experience integrating condition-based monitoring, real-time data collecting, and synthesis into a “factory of the future” shop floor environment.
