Assistant Professor in Anthropology (Education and Research)

Location: Brighton, UK
Salary: Grade 7.4, starting from £41,671 to £45,413 per annum (pro rata if part-time)
Hours: Full-time (36.5 hours per week)
Contract Type: Fixed-term for 24 months
Start Date: 1 September 2025

The Opportunity

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term, full-time position as Assistant Professor in Anthropology (Education and Research). This post is available for two years and offers an exciting opportunity to join a collegial, internationally recognised, and research-intensive department.

The successful candidate will contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Social Anthropology, and will also play a key role in academic advising, dissertation supervision, and departmental administration. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in religion, politics, and global transformation, though other areas will be considered.

The post also carries expectations for high-quality research and impactful engagement that aligns with and enhances the department’s existing strengths.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic and collegial individual with:

  • A PhD in Anthropology or a closely related discipline (or near completion).
  • Research and teaching interests aligned with or complementary to the department’s existing strengths.
  • Expertise in religion, politics, power, and anthropological theory (regional specialism is open).
  • A strong interdisciplinary outlook and commitment to critical, inclusive, and globally engaged pedagogy.
  • Experience in teaching Anthropology at university level and a dedication to delivering high-quality teaching and student support.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to actively contribute to departmental life.
