Lecturer in Applied Mathematics
Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering
Aston University

We are seeking applications for the role of Lecturer in Applied Mathematics within the Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering at Aston University. This position is ideal for individuals who are research-active and passionate about both teaching and advancing mathematical applications in engineering and technology.

We particularly welcome candidates with research expertise in areas such as:

  • Data-driven mathematical modelling for drones and UAVs (including control, navigation, and remote sensing)
  • Multi-vehicle mission planning
  • Energy, transport, or manufacturing systems
  • Fluid dynamics
  • Biomedical mechatronics
  • Financial mathematics

Applicants should have a strong focus on student-centred teaching and demonstrate experience or enthusiasm for lecturing in subjects such as:

  • Probability and statistics
  • Financial mathematics
  • Applied and computational mathematics

Essential Qualifications & Skills:

  • A first degree in Mathematics
  • A PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field
  • A formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCHE) and/or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), or a willingness to obtain this once in post
  • Experience developing and delivering teaching materials and assessing students across varied formats (lectures, tutorials, individual projects)
  • A track record of effective teaching and positive student feedback

Experience with virtual learning environments (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle) is desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging, high-quality teaching in applied mathematics across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Develop and update teaching materials, and assess student performance using diverse methods
  • Support students as a personal tutor
  • Participate in departmental operations, including open days and outreach initiatives
  • Contribute to the department’s research profile and collaborative projects
  • Where appropriate, lead or contribute to key operational and administrative areas within the department
