Grade 7: £38,249 – £45,413 per annum (pro rata for part-time)

About the Role

The Department of History at the University of Sussex is inviting applications for a fixed-term position as Lecturer in US History (Education Focused).

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across undergraduate modules in 19th- and 20th-century History and American Studies. You will deliver specialist teaching in areas such as 20th-century US history and politics, and the Civil Rights Movement. Responsibilities include lectures, seminars, supervision of undergraduate dissertations, student support, and assessment duties.

You’ll be joining a dynamic and collaborative department with strong interdisciplinary links, particularly with American Studies. The History Department at Sussex is ranked 20th in the 2025 Complete University Guide and was 4th for Impact in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

About You

You will hold a PhD in 20th-century US History and bring subject expertise in areas such as the US political system and Civil Rights history. You’ll have a developing research profile and experience teaching in the UK higher education sector. Strong communication skills, a student-centred approach, and experience with undergraduate supervision will be key assets.
