Overview
Are you passionate about safeguarding children and supporting families at risk? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and motivated healthcare professional to join our Safeguarding Team at University Hospitals Birmingham as a Band 6 Children’s Safeguarding Nurse.
This role offers a unique opportunity for professional growth in a highly supportive environment, working alongside an experienced safeguarding team to promote best practice, ensure compliance with statutory guidance, and protect vulnerable children and young people across our Trust.
Role Summary
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary safeguarding team, the post holder will provide advice, support, and guidance to staff on issues relating to the protection and welfare of children. You will support the delivery of safeguarding training, conduct audits, and contribute to the effective management of safeguarding cases in collaboration with the Named and Lead Nurses for Safeguarding.
This role also includes fostering the ‘Think Family’ approach by working in partnership with the Safeguarding Adults Team to ensure holistic, family-centred safeguarding interventions.
You’ll act as a visible and approachable role model across the Trust, delivering expert safeguarding advice and contributing to the development of safe, inclusive clinical environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Safeguarding Children Nurse Specialist Team in managing complex safeguarding cases across the Trust.
- Provide specialist advice on cases of suspected or actual abuse or neglect under appropriate supervision.
- Attend and contribute to strategy meetings, professional meetings, discharge planning discussions, and supervision sessions.
- Deliver Level 3 safeguarding children training to identified staff groups.
- Support daily safeguarding ward visits and engage with clinical teams to embed safeguarding practice.
- Conduct audits to assess safeguarding knowledge and practices across clinical areas.
- Promote best practice by implementing standards and monitoring adherence to both national and local guidance.
- Build effective relationships with clinical staff to support the continuous development of safeguarding knowledge and capability.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- Registered Nurse (RGN, RSCN/RCN, SCPHN or equivalent)
- Current registration with the relevant professional body
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience
- Up-to-date safeguarding training and evidence of CPD
- Teaching qualification or equivalent training experience
Experience
Essential:
- Recent experience working with children and/or young people in a healthcare setting
- Direct involvement in safeguarding practice
- Proven ability to manage sensitive clinical cases in line with policy and procedures
- Good understanding of safeguarding legislation and national frameworks
- Familiarity with local safeguarding protocols
