About Us
The Department of Geography at UCL is globally recognised as one of the leading geography departments (ranked 4th in the QS World Rankings 2025 and 2nd in the Shanghai World Rankings 2024). It has consistently been highly rated in the UK Research Assessment Exercises, with 96% of research classified as World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*) in the 2021 REF.
Our department offers a wide range of research in both Human and Physical Geography, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research. We currently have seven research clusters: Environment, Politics, and Society; Environmental Change and Biodiversity; Past Climates; Environmental Modelling and Observation; Culture and Migration; Global Urbanisms; and Geospatial Analysis and Computing. A new research cluster, Geographies of Health, will be launched in 2025-26.
Staff are involved in a variety of cross-disciplinary initiatives within UCL, including the Institute of Advanced Studies, UCL’s Anthropocene initiative, the UCL Social Data Institute, and the Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the study of Racism and Racialisation. The appointed individual(s) will join UCL’s Health of the Public community, where public health was ranked 3rd in the world in the 2024 Shanghai rankings. Additionally, the role will involve collaboration with UCL’s Institute of Global Health and the Faculty of Population Health Sciences.
Research in Physical Geography benefits from state-of-the-art facilities, including the Geography Laboratories, the Bloomsbury Environmental Isotope Facility (BEIF), and the UCL Environmental Radiometric Facility (ERF), with BEIF being a joint facility with the Department of Earth Sciences.
We are committed to the idea of Geography as a global discipline and welcome applications from candidates with regional expertise from around the world. We aim to deepen our understanding of the planet to foster a more just and sustainable future. Our staff and students engage with local community groups, government agencies, NGOs, international organisations, businesses, and schools to apply global knowledge to local challenges. We are proud of the tangible impact our research and teaching have had in making the world a better place. We seek a new colleague who shares our values of collegiality, inclusivity, and openness.
