JOB SUMMARY
We are looking for a competent Software Engineer to join the Protein Function development team at EMBL-EBI. In this post, you will be responsible for the software design and development of two world-class scientific resources: GlyGen, a leading platform in GlycoScience, and UniProt, one of the most prominent services in biology and biomedicine. This is an interesting position that will assist grow the world’s finest scientific resources while working with international teams from Europe and the United States. You will be based in a dynamic, multidisciplinary workplace, collaborating with top software engineers, bioinformaticians, and scientists to enhance these vital resources.
Your role:
As a software engineer, your primary task will be to design and implement strong software modules and scalable workflows for effective data exchange, integration, and management of the ever-increasing volume of scientific information. You will act as a technical liaison, promoting communication among various resources.
The EBI is a world-class bioinformatics institute that provides biological data to the scientific community and specialises in data storage, processing, and visualisation. The UniProt team serves as a primary resource for protein information, as well as a comprehensive collection of services and computational protein data processing tools.
UniProt is created by the UniProt Consortium, which includes the EBI, the Protein Information Resource (PIR), and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).

Contract duration: three years.
Grading: 5 (monthly pay starting at £3,229 after tax, excluding pension and insurances) with additional paid benefits dependent on personal circumstances.

You have
Good communication skills.
English language abilities are essential.
Ideally, you already have expertise in a multilingual working environment.
I enjoy working in an international environment.
A degree in computer science, mathematics, life sciences, or a related field.
At least two years of professional software development in Java.
Experience in Java programming.
Familiar with conventional development tools.
Understanding good coding methods and methodologies (OOP, IoC, automated testing, clean code principles, code review)
Understanding SQL and relational database design principles, as well as Unix shell scripting
Ability to operate as part of a team of people with a variety of talents and backgrounds.
You might also have.
Experience creating REST applications for containerisation and cloud deployment.

Job Location:
This position is based in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK. If you are based overseas, you will be needed to relocate and will be compensated with a generous relocation package.
