Job Overview:
As a senior nurse, you will be responsible for managing a ward, regularly overseeing day-to-day activities and taking on tasks delegated by the Ward Manager. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care and provide clinical expertise through supervision, training, and direct support to both staff and patients.
You will also offer senior nursing leadership and managerial advice, supporting the management of the clinical area. This includes supervising, deploying, and teaching staff and students, as well as ensuring effective use of resources.
Additionally, you will assess patient care needs, develop and evaluate care programs, and set standards of care across clinical areas. You will also be involved in the hospital bleep holding rota and assist in coordinating emergency responses, including fire, security alerts, and cardiac arrests.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide nursing assessments for referred patients, evaluating their acute medical and rehabilitation needs.
- Take responsibility for planning, assessing, and designing nursing interventions for allocated patients, ensuring a high standard of care.
- Participate actively in ward rounds and multi-professional meetings.
- Ensure adherence to clinical nursing procedures, including the safe storage and administration of medicines.
- Maintain strong communication with patients and their families to ensure they are well-informed about their treatment and care plans.
- Provide immediate management and clinical supervision for junior staff throughout each shift.
- Ensure all staff adhere to the policies and procedures of the clinical area and Trust.
- Support staff in meeting legislative and statutory requirements, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act and Food Hygiene regulations.
- Assist the Ward Manager with the appraisal process for junior staff.
- Follow current disciplinary, grievance, and complaints procedures.
- Participate in recruiting clinical staff up to Band 5.
- Help the Ward Manager provide formal clinical supervision for junior staff.
- Assist in the planning and management of duty rotas, ensuring they are signed off by the Ward Manager.

Job Requirements:
- Registered General Health Nurse with a degree-level education.
- Familiarity with clinical effectiveness and the audit process.
- Recent experience in an acute setting and awareness of current patient needs in both acute and community settings.
- Experience in working directly with service users and carers.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including IT systems.
- Ability to coordinate and manage a ward effectively during shifts.
- Desirable: Experience working with statutory and voluntary agencies, as well as a background in supervision or mentorship roles.
