JOB SUMMARY

 

We have an opening for a trained children’s or learning disability nurse to join our special schools nursing team in Solihull. This position is for 18.75 hours per week during term time only. Agenda for Change. Payscale is used, and term-time only compensation is annualised. This is an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development, as well as to broaden your knowledge and skills in working with children who have complex physical and learning requirements. You will work as part of a team to assess the health needs of school-aged children and young people with special health needs and learning disabilities, promote healthy lifestyles through effective health education programs, and contribute to the larger public health agenda in collaboration with key agencies and professionals. You will learn how to do expert nursing assessments, plan treatment, and implement interventions to improve the health and well-being of children, adolescents, and families with complex medical needs. We work as important members of the Multi-disciplinary Team, with responsibility for a specific caseload of children and young people, addressing their physical, emotional, and safeguarding needs.

Main responsibilities, tasks, and abilities required

Our ideal applicant will be able to manage themselves and their daily tasks in order to provide effective and efficient care. We serve primary and secondary school-aged children and young people by assessing the school community’s health needs and meeting those needs through multi-agency collaboration, health promotion activities, staff training, liaison with parents/caregivers, and referrals to appropriate agencies. Our staff develops care plans in collaboration with families and members of the larger multidisciplinary team for medical disorders and emergency treatment. They promote public health principles in schools and the community through successful collaboration, policy formulation, and curriculum planning. Staff are expected to: participate in and support the provision of ‘drop in’ sessions for children and parents within schools; always follow Trust and NMC confidentiality guidelines; contribute to education review meetings; contribute to Education and Health Care Plans; and promote inclusion for children with learning disabilities and complex needs. Qualifications

Essential

  • Current registration with the NMC: RSCN/RN Child Branch, Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities.
  • Prepared to complete required training, such as public health, sexual health, and counselling skills.
  • Evidence of professional development and relevant research.

Desirable

  • Qualifications for teachers and assessors.
  • Evidence of professional progress in areas such as sexual health, health promotion, public health, and mental health.
  • Relevant experience working with children and families with complicated health needs.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with children and adolescents in health or education settings.
  • Experience working with many agencies.
  • Awareness of safety issues.
  • Awareness of national concerns and initiatives that affect children and young people.
  • Evidence of continuous professional improvement.
  • Understanding of secrecy and accountability.

Desirable

  • Experience dealing with children and young people with special needs.
