JOB SUMMARY
Job Purpose
To provide functional leadership to three infectious disease laboratories (veterinary virology, veterinary microbiology, and veterinary parasitology) under the SBOHVM’s Veterinary Diagnostic Service (VDS), while managing this substantial service with great autonomy. To support the convergence of commercial and academic research operations, the service will be strategically developed and its international reputation will be enhanced. The function entails establishing ties with biotechnology companies in order to get commercial diagnostic contracts and build collaborative partnerships. The post holder will collaborate with the academic head of infectious disease to create unique, cutting-edge companion animal diagnostics to ensure the service’s profitability.
Main duties and responsibilities
1.Be responsible for the planning, management, and operation of technical services, including oversight of bacteriology, parasitology, and virology diagnostic laboratories.
2.Manage a rapid and efficient service, ensuring accurate testing and reporting of samples from internal/external veterinarians and institutions, with quality assurance control throughout; assess the section’s ongoing test requirements and react accordingly; and prioritise and delegate tasks within the infectious disease unit.
3. Use professional technical knowledge and experience to design and provide the infectious disease service in an ever-changing veterinary diagnostic market.
4. Use specialised resources in companion animal diagnostics in innovative ways, developing new methods with higher sensitivity and accuracy to expand the service’s testing repertoire in order to preserve and strengthen its international reputation.
5.Work with the academic head of infectious disease to establish cooperation with research scientists and commercial companies on both scholarly and commercial ventures.
6.Manage the diagnostic laboratory budget, monitor expenditures, and take corrective action if budget restrictions are exceeded.
7.Develop/improve staff capacity in infectious disease laboratories by integrating the three disciplines into an effective and efficient service unit and motivating/mentoring employees to better fulfil current and future commercial and research requirements.
8.Contribute to the management of the diagnostic service and the School as a whole by serving on relevant committees and organisations.
9.Set priorities and assign resources to satisfy the infectious disease service’s planned objectives as well as the veterinary diagnostic service’s overall requirements.
10.To provide teaching and training in a specific area to undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, clinical scholars, nurses, and technical professionals through tutorials, seminars, and one-on-one instruction as needed.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Degree or Equivalent in Related Subjects
A2 Working understanding of diagnostic virology, bacteriology, and parasitology, sufficient to supervise professionals in each of these areas.
A3 Understanding of important health and safety concerns, as well as University regulations and procedures.
Desirable
B1 Postgraduate qualification in Biological Sciences, Virology, or Microbiology
B2 Demonstrates extensive theoretical and practical knowledge/skills in a variety of virology diagnostic and research techniques, including molecular biology, tissue culture, tests, and virus purification.

C6 Possesses extensive IT abilities, especially expertise in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

D1 Possess advanced/specialist skills in the field of veterinary virology.

E1 Significant diagnostic laboratory experience.
E2 Experience working alone.
E3 Extensive practical knowledge in molecular and serological testing, as well as traditional virology, bacteriology, and parasitology.
E4 Extensive IT experience, mostly in scientific application software and expert systems.

F1 Experience in research-oriented technical work, as demonstrated by publications.
F2 Experience in staff leadership, supervision, and motivation, aiding junior colleagues’ promotion.
Terms & Conditions.
The annual salary for Grade 7 will range between £39,347 and £44,263.
This position is full-time and open-ended.
