Salary: £42,840 (Band D) to £53,818 (Band E) per year (depending on abilities and experience).

Hours: Full-time

Contract Type: Open-ended.

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

Come and do the kind of work that inspired you to be an engineer. Develop your technical talents while improving your human understanding. Encourage sustainability and develop new materials. And, working with world-class scientists, technicians, and technologists, shape projects that improve lives and daily living in the UK and abroad.

Simply put, come and see what an impact you can make when you’re prepared, motivated, and inspired to give your all.

The ISIS Electrical and Electronic User Support Group (EEUSG) is presenting an excellent chance to join its Mechatronics Control Section. The Mechatronics team is critical in supporting the neutron and muon instruments, as well as the experimental equipment, which rely on motion systems to carry out the wide range of experiments performed at ISIS each year.

As a member of the mechatronics section, you will be in charge of supporting all areas of our instruments’ motion control equipment. This will include:

  • Testing, commissioning, and support for a wide range of software control systems and measuring equipment.
  • Maintenance operations are planned, including safe working practices, and maintenance records are kept properly.
  • Assisting our mechanical teams with the construction and installation of ISIS beamline motion control equipment.
  • Supporting the integration of user-provided experimental equipment.
  • Seeking chances for ongoing improvement of motion control equipment that may result in increased functionality, dependability, or performance.
  • Representing the section as a Mechatronics Control stakeholder during design reviews.
  • Repair and maintenance of equipment, including rewiring and reassembly as needed.
  • Providing direction, assistance, and encouragement to all graduates and apprentices working in the Mechatronics Support division and the larger group.
  • exhibiting your work at conferences and seminars in the UK and abroad.

At UKRI Band E level, you would be expected to work more autonomously when handling difficult maintenance issues, as well as to create, execute, and approve safe working practices. You would also be expected to supervise subordinate personnel.

ISIS is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the group provides technical support outside of normal business hours through an on-call system. You would have the opportunity to work alongside the other members of the group to support our on-call system. An on-call allowance is due.

Personal Specification (UKRI Band D)
To be reviewed at either shortlisting (S), interview (I), or both (S+I).

  • Qualified HNC or higher (HND, MEng, MSc, BEng) in a relevant engineering area, or considerable expertise in Mechatronics, Robotics, or Controls engineering. (S)
  • demonstrable knowledge of mechatronic experience within an industrial or scientific setting, which could include: (S+I)
  • Machine design and alignment of mechatronic systems.
  • Assembly of electrical systems and cabling.
  • Setting up PLC motion control systems.
  • The ability to critically evaluate systems and determine the root reason of failure. (S+I)
  • Understanding of safety systems and dealing with Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). (I)
  • Basic grasp of communication technologies and controller configurations such as Ethernet IP, Biss-c/SSI, and RS232. (I)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. (S+I)

In addition to the following, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Advanced understanding of at least two aspects of mechatronics (mechanical, electrical, and software) (I)
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 structured text and object-oriented programming (ISIS currently employs the Beckhoff TwinCAT platform for new motion control systems, however knowledge of this particular system is not essential). (I)
  • Experience measuring and assessing motion performance, including accuracy and repeatability. (I)
  • Working understanding of the Machinery Directive and PUWER (I).
  • Experience directly or indirectly managing people, providing technical supervision, or mentoring junior technicians or engineers. (I)
