JOB SUMMARY
Job Purpose
To manage technical aspects of the research on behalf of the Principal Investigator, Professor Will Fuller, including providing specialist technical expertise in the relevant discipline and being in charge of the creation, setup, and/or operation of all technical resources used to achieve research objectives. In addition, the post holder will carry out a variety of technical support operations in accordance with the College/Institute/School Strategy.
Main duties and responsibilities
1. As a member of the research group, work on the specific technical components of the research.
2. Provide expert technical guidance to the research team, which includes researchers, teachers, and technicians, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate/PhD students. Where necessary, assist with the supervision of students in the research group.
3. Progress technical components of research objectives in accordance with the PI’s predetermined timescales.
4. Generate ideas independently and put agreed-upon experimental strategy concepts into action.
5. Design and develop experiments, systems, protocols, equipment, and/or other technical resources to help achieve research objectives.
6. Stay current on changes in key research/technical areas as well as the larger discipline to ensure that your contribution to research goals is maximised.
7. Manage the technical parts of the research project, including, when applicable, the laboratory, technical resources, and technical staff. Ensure that operational delivery of technical resources is optimised, and strive to continuously improve the technical service.
8. Troubleshoot difficult technical problems, including concerns with technical resource design and operation, as well as data generation.
9. Conduct complicated data analysis, identifying trends, difficulties, or anomalies, and deliver findings effectively to the study group and/or wider audiences through presentations or relevant research publications.
10. Where applicable, take day-to-day control of the research budget, developing spending plans, monitoring outgoings and targets, and sending summary reports to PIs as needed.
11. Be in charge of the day-to-day management and compliance with applicable Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements. Maintain all essential records in compliance with established regulations, stay current on advancements or legal changes pertinent to the work of the research group, and advise and train group members as needed. Any potential difficulties should be reported to the PI and/or the relevant internal or external entities as soon as possible.
12. Collaborate with others, including those within the College/Institute/School and, when applicable, external contacts, to improve the delivery of research goals and support the University’s overall strategic goals.
Qualification, Knowledge, Skill, and Experience
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 [Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent, and experience in personal development in a related job.
A2. Significant breadth or depth of technical knowledge and recognition as an expert in the relevant field.
A3. Current understanding of relevant legislative requirements governing the role, including but not limited to health and safety.
A4. A degree or equivalent in the relevant discipline is desirable. Working towards professional registration with the appropriate authorities.
Skills
Essential:
C1. Demonstrates specific technical skills relevant to the research project.
C2. Advanced IT abilities, including proficiency with applicable specialist or bespoke software applications.
C3.Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including a high level of precision and attention to detail when working with complex data.
C4. Proven interpersonal and communication abilities, particularly the capacity to grasp, conceptualise, and interpret technical requirements of a research group, and adjust one’s own approach to match the demands of others.
C5. Demonstrates excellent collaborative skills, as well as supervisory or line management abilities as applicable.
C6. The ability to organise and prioritise a wide range of technical tasks to fulfil competing demands.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Significant relevant job experience in a similar research context, including examples of earlier outputs and professional development.
E2. Experience understanding and interpreting complicated technical requirements of service users, as well as implementing effective methods to meet those demands.
E3. Budget management experience, including spending approvals and outgoings monitoring on behalf of others.
E4. Demonstrated ability to work independently to progress and deliver research objectives within specified time frames.
E5. Experience with molecular biology, cloning, and cell culture is required.
E6. Experience in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and recombinant protein purification is preferred.
Terms & Conditions.
The annual salary for Grade 6 will be £32,332 – £36,024.
This position is full-time and funded for up to 36 months from the start date in the first instance.
