JOB SUMMARY

 

Job Purpose

The goal of this position is to give personalised academic and study-related support to disabled students, particularly those who are autistic/neurodivergent. Individuals’ needs will determine the level and type of support provided. Mentors typically aid students in managing the effects of their disease, developing organisational skills, and efficiently managing their time and workload. This support will assist students in developing as independent learners while maintaining the necessary emphasis on academic development.

The Specialist Mentor (Neurodiversity) will work in the Disability Service as part of the Wellbeing & Inclusion team, collaborating closely and proactively with colleagues in the Student & Academic Services Directorate and across the University to provide high-quality professional support to students.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Providing mentoring support, counsel, and direction to impaired students, particularly those who are autistic/neurodivergent. This support is intended to help students develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.

2. Work with a caseload of students in a systematic manner to provide support, offering practical solutions and good habits to help students improve their academic achievement and manage anxiety/stress associated with workload.

3. Keep careful and accurate notes of visits with students and communicate with Disability Advisers to stay up to date on their development.

4. Maintain the confidentiality of the work and follow the GDPR regulations.

5. Identify individuals at academic or psychological risk, taking appropriate steps to escalate issues as needed, and assisting students in accessing additional University resources as needed.

6. Pursue ongoing professional development to retain their knowledge base, self-awareness, and improved abilities.

7. On occasion, assist students who require physical assistance on campus and/or notetaking assistance in class.

8. Perform other duties within the Disability Service commensurate with the grade, such as assisting in the delivery of training materials and workshops to colleagues in the academic Colleges and Schools.

9. Provide administrative support for the service as needed, such as data input and record keeping.

10. Work with the larger multidisciplinary team and other colleagues to provide effective wellness support and clear referral paths.

Knowledge, qualifications, skills, and experience.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 8, as well as complete adult autism training.

A2 In-depth knowledge and understanding of neurodiversity and autism, as well as their potential implications for research.

A3 Understanding and experience helping impaired students in a university/higher education setting.

A4 Understanding of important mental health concerns that affect university students.

A5 Understanding of the emotional and developmental components of student learning.

A6 Understanding the student’s stage of personal development and changes.

A7 A working awareness of the legislative framework that governs disability support, such as GDPR, the Equality Act, and the Public Sector Equality Duty.

A8 Understanding of assistive technology and how it can benefit pupils.

Skills

Essential:

C3 Demonstrated capacity to take initiative, prioritise workload, and actively seek help and input on challenging matters.

C7 Ability to provide sensitive and competent help to pupils who appear to be at risk or in distress.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience working with autistic/neurodivergent students who have varying learning needs and obstacles.

E2 Practical Mentoring Experience

E3 Experience with risk management and escalation in regard to mental health.

E4 Experience working in a fast-paced, high-pressure setting.

E5 Experience with case management, including keeping clear and concise case notes and communicating with Disability Advisers and others as needed.

Desirable:

F1 Experience working in a University/Higher Education Disability Service or comparable.

Terms & Conditions.

The salary will be Grade 6, £32,332 – £36,024 per year pro rata.

This is a part-time (21 hours per week) position that only exists during the academic year.
