Overview of the Role

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering an excellent development opportunity for individuals wishing to train as a Sonographer. Over a structured two-year postgraduate training programme, you will work towards becoming a fully competent, autonomous ultrasound practitioner while contributing to a high-quality imaging service across the Trust.

This role is ideal for those motivated to progress into advanced clinical practice through a blend of academic study and hands-on clinical experience.

Throughout the programme, trainees will rotate across multiple Ultrasound Departments within the Trust and attend an accredited university to complete a recognised postgraduate qualification in medical ultrasound.

Responsibilities Once Qualified

When training is successfully completed, you will:

  • Work independently, performing ultrasound examinations to a high clinical standard.
  • Produce accurate, timely reports for referring clinicians.
  • Deliver patient-centred care aligned with the Trust’s values and its commitment to compassion, dignity and respect.
  • Support the day-to-day running of an efficient Ultrasound service in collaboration with the Radiology team.
  • Contribute to wider departmental activities—including staff training, governance, clinical audit and research development.

Job Responsibilities (Summary)

  • Undertake a postgraduate ultrasound qualification over two years.
  • Build competence across core clinical areas: obstetric, gynaecological, abdominal and vascular ultrasound.
  • Rotate across Trust ultrasound services as part of clinical placement.
  • Upon qualification, independently perform ultrasound imaging and issue clinical reports.
  • Maintain exceptional patient care standards.
  • Support governance activities, research projects and staff development within the department.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Diagnostic Radiography (or equivalent health-related degree).

Desirable

  • Previous experience within the Trust’s ultrasound department.
