Introduction

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a motivated and ambitious registered professional to join our Emergency Department as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). Our established ACP team has been active for over five years, and the department is enthusiastic about welcoming and supporting a new trainee into this specialist environment.

This role is ideal for clinicians who are passionate about advancing their practice, developing strong decision-making skills, and working autonomously in a fast-paced setting.

What the Role Involves

As a trainee ACP within Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), you will work towards becoming an autonomous, highly skilled practitioner capable of managing your own caseload under the guidance of an experienced medical mentor. Your development will focus on the four pillars of advanced clinical practice: clinical expertise, leadership, education, and research.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing, diagnosing, planning and implementing treatment for patients presenting to Emergency Medicine services.
  • Taking comprehensive clinical histories and completing holistic physical and mental health examinations.
  • Performing advanced clinical assessments, initiating management plans and reviewing patient progress within your scope of practice.
  • Undertaking a range of clinical procedures, including invasive investigations and diagnostic testing where required.
  • Working toward or practising as an Independent/Supplementary Non-Medical Prescriber in line with Trust and national guidelines.

Key Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Current professional registration (e.g., NMC, HCPC).
  • Studying toward or already holding a Level 7 Master’s qualification recognised by NHS England.
  • Experience supporting education or holding a suitable teaching-related qualification.
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical skills within a relevant clinical area.
  • Completion of extended practice competencies such as cystoscopy, LATP, urodynamics, or comparable skills depending on profession.

Essential Experience

  • Substantial clinical experience, ideally involving elective and emergency care for benign and malignant urological patients.
  • Experience providing clinical leadership.
  • Evidence of engagement in audit or research activity.

  • Ability to prioritise and independently manage a changing workload.
  • Capability to identify and act on learning needs.
  • Precision and dexterity in clinical procedures and use of medical equipment.
  • Strong documentation and digital literacy.
