Overview of the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking a proactive and experienced Student Casework Manager to join our Complaints & Conduct team. Working alongside an established Casework Manager, you will help lead and coordinate the management of complex student cases across complaints, discipline, and criminal conviction procedures.

This role requires an individual who can apply policy with sensitivity and fairness, safeguard student wellbeing, and protect institutional integrity—all while ensuring our processes reflect national standards and evolving sector expectations.

What You Will Be Responsible For

Case Management & Decision Support

  • Oversee end-to-end handling of student complaints, disciplinary issues, and criminal conviction cases.
  • Lead on high-risk and sensitive matters, including cases involving sexual misconduct, ensuring these are approached with a trauma-informed and legally sound framework.
  • Provide expert advice to senior decision-makers and chair/ clerk Misconduct Panel Hearings, supporting fair, proportionate outcomes.

External Liaison & Sector Standards

  • Act as the University’s primary point of contact with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA).
  • Produce clear, defensible responses that demonstrate institutional learning and compliance with national expectations.
  • Monitor emerging developments and regulatory changes within the UK higher education landscape, including updates from Department for Education.

Policy, Systems & Training

  • Strengthen the University’s internal processes by improving workflows, documentation, reporting, and training.
  • Work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to ensure consistent practice and a streamlined student journey.
  • Support staff across the institution to understand their responsibilities in relation to conduct, complaints, and risk management.

Student Experience & Risk Reduction

  • Promote a culture where students feel able to raise concerns safely and confidently.
  • Help minimise legal and reputational risk to the University through robust, evidence-based case decisions aligned with UK legislation such as data protection requirements
  • Ensure our work supports a fair, inclusive and respectful learning environment.

About You

We are looking for a calm, resilient professional with substantial experience handling complex and emotional casework. You should be confident working with distressing or sensitive content and demonstrate excellent judgment, impartiality, and emotional intelligence.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Strong investigative experience and a trauma-informed approach.
  • A degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Excellent organisational and digital skills, and the ability to manage a varied caseload.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and experience embedding these values in daily work.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence working with stakeholders at all levels.
